The mobile revolution is upon us. According to Nielsen, just over a third of cell phone subscribers in the US now have smartphones. Mobile tablets, such the IPad and BlackBerry PlayBook, are new and increasingly popular. The days of the desktop and laptop may well be numbered.
Portability, geolocation, instant network access and simple more intuitive interaction are some of the many advantages of mobile devices. Mobile development spans both Web and native applications. WebMapSolutions offer both consulting and application development services
Consulting Services
Mobile has the capacity to change society in ways we cannot even fathom today. But like the early days of the Web it is a confusing landscape. Yet organisations need to begin developing a mobile strategy today. WebMapSolutions can help overcome obstacles; and demystify this new exciting mobile world. Our consultants can help plan and architect your mobile solution.
Geolocation is an important advantage of mobile. Mobile users can now ask what or who is nearby them. They can also update, edit and collect data at a specific location. New mobile applications can provide answers beyond what is currently available on a PC. Key areas include:
- Visualization – Users can now use mobile viewers to see their surrounding area. Imagine a civil engineer on site, wondering where the underground pipes run. He can now overlay a pipe layer and see exactly what is under his feet
- Query and Search – Forest managers can search for trees by species, and relate these results to soil type and slope
- Update and Editing – An agricultural worker in California is now able to update a GIS with crop type, acreage planted, and pest control in real time.
- Data Collection – Surveyors in the field can now gather data on location; text, images, voice even video, and store this all centrally
- Offline & Online – Pipelines often run through areas where there is no Wi-Fi connectivity. Mobiles can not only store data locally for visualization; basemap tiles and shapefiles, but data gathered can also be stored on the mobile device for later upload.
- Management and Coordination – Knowing workers locations, optimizing their travel, viewing data gathered in real time, coordinating their activity in the field will lead to big savings and increased efficiency in many industries
- Geo-Marketing, geo-advertising and geo-social mobile apps are increasingly more important in companies overall marketing mix

Application Development Services
Our development efforts are focused on both mobile and Web solutions. Some of our key areas of focus include:
Mobile Tablet Application Development
WebMapsolutions are actively developing the next generation of mobile tablet applications. Our developers are currently building mobile software solutions for Apple IOS, Android and Blackberry devices. Mobile GIS has been a particular focus of our work. We have just launched GeoMobile for ArcGIS a free mobile ArcGIS viewer. The video below shows a demo of this mobile app running on an IPad:
A number of our clients have been looking for mobile GIS solutions which provide feature editing. The video below is a demo of a mobile ArcGIS app running on an Android tablet, showing feature addition and editing:
SmartPhone Mobile Application Development
WebMapsolutions have combined the portablility of smartphones with the built in GPS, to take advantage of location. We have developed a number of innovative mobile application solutions for clients. Facility management has been an area of focus; we recently completed a mobile check-in application, which allows service technicians to quickly check-in and out of calls. The mobile application not only reduced costs, but simplified the work flow and allowed technicians to quickly move on to their next call. The video below shows a demo of this application:
Offline application use is another area we have recently focused our attention. A device which either has no 3G/4G or is being used in a remote area. The demo below shows a mobile GIS application being used in online and offline modes:
Data collection and editing of data in both online and offline mode is an increasingly important area of our mobile work. The application below shows a mobile ArcGIS application in offline mode, being used to edit shapefile features. This is all stored locally and can be uploaded once back online:
Web Application Development

We remain very much focused on the Web development. Our designers and developers continue to build intuitive, stunning Web sites. Our work includes fire tracking applications for the US Forest Service. Online language learning systems for Gale, and remote medical image collaboration tools for VisualShare.
