I seem to have a repeating theme in this blog about fulfilling your potential. And by doing so helping to drive forward the exciting future of GIS. I like the title of this post: The Exciting Future of GIS: from Nirvana to ….. In part because i plan to talk briefly about music. Specifically about two bands I’ve always liked: Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. And a musician Dave Grohl: a member of both bands.
Now I’m not saying we drop GIS to become musicians … let’s dig deeper.
Nirvana were a cult band from Seattle. Led by Kurt Cobain; a unique singer and songwriter. They became the poster children of grunge. With songs like Smells like Teen Spirit, they had a unique sound.
Dave Grohl joined the band as the drummer. His drumming drove the bands sound. But Cobain was the singer and songwriter. Cobain was Nirvana.
On Friday, April 8, 1994 Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle. Nirvana were no more. The remaining band members disappeared into obscurity….
Not so. A new band named the Foo Fighters started getting radio and tv time. With a very recognizable lead singer: one Dave Grohl. And no longer a drummer, but songwriter, and guitarist!
Dave Grohl stepped from the background to the foreground. From supporting to influencing and leading. All his unrealised potential while a member of Nirvana was released in the Foo Fighters.
The Exciting Future of GIS
Today we live in rapidly changing times for GIS. The old ways of using the technology is changing before our eyes. Driven by mobile and cloud, we are entering a brave new world. But who will be driving GIS forward?
You and I, that is who.
We live in a world of leaders. Some are like Kurt Cobain; innovators, individual thinkers, unique people. Too many others are leaders in name only. Today GIS needs the best brains to step forward. To be given (or take) the opportunity to drive our industry. If your voice is not being heard currently: your company leaders are not listening or don’t understand. Find a way to be heard, to influence.
Be creative. Be important. Think wide (and not narrow). Be inspired.
Like Dave Grohl.
