I’m not one for shameless plugs. But I thought it worth mentioning the work we have been doing with GeoAppSmart. I’ve discussed before the increasing need for custom mobile ArcGIS apps. Web technology is without doubt the most flexible approach to mobile development. Though Web is not a solution for all mobile GIS problems, it covers many use cases. Its flexibility and ease of configuration and customization make mobile web very attractive to many organizations. Let’s explore.
Need an Easy to Build Custom ArcGIS Mobile App?
When at WebMapSolutions we started thinking about the perfect mobile ArcGIS custom solution, we came up with the following list:
1) Can be used on any device – PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet, Apple, Android, Windows
2) Can be used anytime, anywhere – Online or offline
3) Easy to set up, configure and use
4) Easy to customize
The notion of GIS anywhere, anytime on any device we lift from a blog post we wrote back in the mists of time. We see GIS as no longer an office bound technology (this was actually the driver behind the formation of WebMapSolutions).
Mobile GIS today is a very mixed bag. We saw no mobile app available which satisfied the above list.
Mobile GIS apps which work anywhere, anytime on any device and are easy to customize did not exist
And that is why we built GeoAppSmart. We will take no credit for the core framework, that’s a wonderful open source project. We’ve taken that core, built an offline library and started to develop custom configurable mobile ArcGIS apps for those with specific mobile needs. See some example on our GeoAppSmart web page.
Looking into the crystal ball we think mobile GIS will be increasingly driven by web technology. And that GeoAppSmart is one of a new breed of mobile ArcGIS apps.
