The possibilities presented by mobile technology and GIS is only just beginning to truly be realised. As a company we have been actively developing Android and Apple mobile GIS apps for over 2 years. We are ever more excited about how we can now apply GIS in the field. One new release from Esri which really caught our attention was the GeoEnrichment service. Below is an iPad demo of site selection analysis using ArcGIS Online, and this new service.
Esri define GeoEnrichment as follows:
“GeoEnrichment is a new term that Esri is promoting which encompasses four main functionalities of ArcGIS Online. They are mapping, infographics, reports, and data enrichment. These four functions are core to location analytics and are built into applications that integrate with all the leading enterprise business systems including Microsoft Office, SharePoint, SAP, IBM Cognos, MicroStrategy, Salesforce, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
GeoEnrichment is a collection of web services that dynamically append geospatial information to tabular datasets (spreadsheets), enterprise databases, and even maps.
Users can also interact with web maps and receive geoenriched information based on the thousands of demographic, lifestyle and landscape variables that exist in ArcGIS Online.”
Geoenrichment offers many possibilities. We have a particular interest in site location for new store locations. The above demo forms part of a suite of apps we are developing providing on-site tools for executives when assessing new retail locations. This new service from Esri provides the ability to replace paper reports with dynamic analysis. Storing the data centrally in the cloud and leveraging the Geoenrichment service will change dramatically the process of site selection. We are building both mobile and Web based apps to help improve site selection analysis.
