The traditional way to work in the field with GIS data has been using a Trimble mobile device with programmes such as ArcPad. The widespread availability of new mobile devices, means field workers now have access to new tools. These are particularly relevant to those working in operations in the oil and gas sector. It is now possible to build mobile apps which do not require GIS training. Simple workflows to get tasks completed without the need for pen and paper. We are about to move into a new era for the mobile workforce.
We’ve been building mobile apps which leverage Esri’s new mapping platform; ArcGIS Online. One of our areas of focus has been mobile editing in both online and offline modes. Using oil and gas data from Central Utah, the following demo shows the editing of features in online and offline modes. Included also is the attaching of multimedia (in this case images) elements to a feature:
