There is a serious misconception we keep bumping into. Worth mention in this short blog post. That learning GIS is similar to learning Photoshop. I’ll admit to being perplexed, and a little concerned. How and why is this a perspective we keep coming across?
Learning GIS is Similar to Learning Photoshop?
Photoshop is one of my favourite software programmes. Useful in so many ways for working with graphics. I’m one of many who have taken a 2 week course to hone my skills. Photoshop is a wonderful tool, narrow in focus and intuitive to use. Just like GIS!
WRONG
I feel for users who jump into the world of GIS thinking it will be like learning Photoshop. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I do wonder how they have arrived at this conclusion? Is it a presumption on their part or how the technology is being presented to them?
Whatever the cause, we need to quickly dispel this myth. Once users learn that GIS is not like learning Photoshop they turn away very quickly. And good luck bringing them back!
