We’ve all, at some point in our lives, thought or said the following:
“I’d love to ….(fill in the blank)…. BUT I have no idea where to start, and if i did I have no budget.”
In a GIS context this might be:
“We have all this location data. I’d love to be able to use it to help us better run our business BUT ….”
“I’d love to be able to share our data with our citizens and get feedback BUT …”
Money and knowledge are so often the barriers stopping us from providing great solutions to problems. I remember well having conversations in the mid-1990’s with some large companies about the (then emerging) Internet. A common viewpoint was:
“We have our marketing strategy firmly in place, it would be hard to justify the expense for adding a company Web site.”
Imagine a successful company now without a Web site. So how did things change so dramatically? How did it suddenly become easy to justify the budget for a company Web site?
Understanding and demonstration. That is how.
Today, location technology or GIS provides new insight across organizations. Cloud GIS has opened many new possibilities. True it has led to confusion. But by understanding, then demonstrating, budget will follow.
As a company, much of our work starts with demystifying. Helping our clients understand. With that understanding comes a world of possibilities.
